Black Tiger Prawn

The taxonomy of tiger prawn is as follows:
Phylum   Arthopoda
Class   Crustacea
Order   Decapoda
Family   Penaedae
Genus   Penaeus
Species   monodon
All the types of culture like extensive, modified extensive, semi-intensive & intensive culture methods were followed in tiger prawn culture. Most common stocking densities generally seen in India were extensive and semi-intensive.

In the extensive culture the stocking generally less than 5peices per sq. meter aiming for an out put of up to a ton per hector. In the case of modified extensive culture the stocking goes up to 10pieces per sq. meter aiming for an out put of 2 tons/hector. In these cases aerator will be required at the later part of the culture operation.

In the case of semi-intensive culture the stocking is done discriminately in the 90's going up to 80-100 pieces per sq. meter. But after the viral attack it has gone down and farmers find it safer to go up to 40 pieces per sq. meter. Aerators are uses through out the culture period.

New technology has been developed to culture the tiger prawn avoiding all possibilities of the viral attack. Use of anti-bacterial/ antiviral probiotics are being used widely with zero water exchange. The precaution taken are to avoid soil sources of the virus using polythene liners; water source by zero water exchange or with chlorinated , de-chlorinated water and seed by selecting virus free seeds for stocking.
